The Center for Applied Isotope Studies (CAIS) offers gamma and beta radionuclide analysis for a range of sample types, including sediments, food additives, and animal products such as poultry. These analyses are often required for regulatory compliance in countries that import food products from the United States.

Sediments

– Submit at least 1 kg of dried sediment (additional prep fees may apply if not pre-dried).
– A 500 ml subsample will be analyzed for gamma activity.

Food Additives & Food Products

– Submit at least 1 kg for gamma analysis and 250 g for beta analysis.
– Ship samples frozen via overnight courier for morning delivery.

*If sample is not ready for analysis, please call for additional sample preparation costs

Poultry

– Collect five leg quarters (one per day for five consecutive days).
– Ship frozen via overnight courier for morning delivery.
– Composite sample (~2+ kg) will be chopped and ground for analysis by CAIS (processing included in fee).
– Maximum permitted activity for gamma: 180 Bq/kg (may vary by product).
– Maximum permitted activity for beta: 80 Bq/kg (activity above natural ¹⁴C levels).

Service DescriptionFeeTurnaround Time
Gamma Analysis (Sediments, Food, Poultry) Detects gamma-emitting radionuclides using high-resolution gamma spectrometry (12,000-second count time). $300* 15–20 days
Beta Analysis (Food & Poultry) Quantifies total beta-emitting radionuclides. Sample is digested, centrifuged, and counted via Liquid Scintillation Counting (LSC). Contact Us 15–20 days
Gamma & Beta Combo (Poultry only) Includes both gamma and beta analyses of poultry composite sample. $1,250 15–20 days
*If sample is not ready for analyses, please call for additional sample preparation costs

Please contact CAIS to discuss sample preparation needs or determine the best approach for your specific product type.
