Philip Riekenberg

Philip Riekenberg joined CAIS in 2024 and has 17 years of experience working with stable isotopes to support research efforts. Philip enjoys working with bulk and compound specific techniques to provide context to ecological and biogeochemical questions that are otherwise confounding. Philip started his career working in coastal Louisiana and earned a MS degree in oceanography from Louisiana State University in 2012. From there an interest in compound specific stable isotope techniques led him to complete a PhD in Biogeochemistry at Southern Cross University in Lismore, Australia in 2018. His PhD work used PLFAs and amino acids in combination with rare isotope labeling techniques to examine uptake and processing of organic matter into intertidal sediments. He was a postdoc at NIOZ in the Netherlands from 2017-24, where he established and applied methods for amino acid C and N to ecosystems ranging from the Wadden Sea to the arctic mid-ocean ridge. A list of publications can be found here.

In his free time, Philip enjoys homebrewing and dog walks.
